Giving each child the opportunity to live their journey through childhood to livelihood is an objective which is being thrived upon by various organizations and we, the students of IIM Lucknow, believe in the quote –

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we Give”!

~ Winston Churchill

On the occasion of 70th Independence day celebrations, Team Bhavishya, the Social Initiative Committee of IIM Lucknow organized a sensitizing visit to an orphanage-Rajkiya Bal Grih in Dubagga. We strongly believe that every child is a jar full of delight and talent and we looked forward to spending precious time with the children. The child care center consisted of 96 students from all walks of life i.e. children with different stages of disabilities, orphaned kids and mentally challenged kids.

Our arrival at the orphanage was met with shrieks of joy and happiness among the kids. A few kids did recognize us from our last visit and were enthused by our presence. Each of their eyes had a story to share which reflected the soul beneath. The most unforgettable moment was the sparkle in their eyes on receiving gifts and the possession they had towards them. In the digital age where children are too often drawn to screens, we made use of the conventional method of conducting a Drawing Competition for the kids. It was fun to see the volunteers assisting the kids in their imaginative powers and the flow of creativity; thus giving them a chance to relive their childhood. The kids depicted various themes of their dream house, favorite super-heroes, scenic paintings but the most dominant one was their depiction of patriotism which fit well with the occasion.

Few outdoor activities were held where it was remarkable to see exceptional performances in singing and dancing by immensely talented kids. The kids grooved to popular beats in unison shedding all their inhibitions. To inculcate a creative bent of mind, an origami workshop was conducted by Ms Sushma Banra, a 2nd year student of IIM Lucknow, where she taught kids to make lovely roses out of colorful craft paper. The children thoroughly enjoyed and made beautiful flowers out of which a souvenir was made and dedicated to the orphanage.

Results of various competitions were announced followed by distribution of prizes. The volunteers distributed snacks to the children and spent time conversing with them. Finally, it was time to bid goodbye to the kids who in their quiet voices whispered “Thank you” in an effort to express gratitude.

Kudos to all the volunteers of IIM Lucknow for making a difference!

A day well spent!
